Staying Safe This Summer

Now that June’s here and summer has officially started we’re all hoping for brighter days, warmer weather and more time spent outdoors.

Whether it’s trips to the park, days out with the family, walks with friends or simply enjoying a bit of sunshine in the garden, summer can be a lovely time for our community to get outside and enjoy themselves.

But with warmer weather also comes the importance of staying safe.

Sun & Heat Safety

When it get’s warmer, it’s important to take care in the heat especially for children, older people and anyone spending long periods outdoors.

Simple things can make a big difference, such as:

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day

Wearing suncream regularly

Staying in the shade where possible

Wearing hats and light clothing

Taking breaks from the heat when needed

The weather can be unpredictable lately, sunshine one minute and rain the next but it’s always good to be prepared if another hot spell arrives.

Looking after yourself and others during warmer weather helps everyone enjoy the summer safely.

Water Safety Awareness

During the summer months, more people naturally spend time near rivers, canals, lakes and other open water areas. While these places can look inviting in warm weather, open water can be extremely dangerous.

Strong currents, hidden hazards and cold temperatures beneath the surface can all pose serious risks.

It’s important to remember:

Children should always be supervised around water

Never enter open water alone

Be aware of currents and hidden dangers

Stay alert near rivers, canals and lakes

A quick decision around water can quickly become dangerous, so raising awareness and staying cautious is really important.

As a community centre, we always want to help spread positive safety messages that support local families and young people throughout the summer months.

Most importantly, enjoy the summer, look after one another and stay safe.
