December is a wonderful time of year, but it can also be one of the busiest and most expensive. After the excitement of Christmas shopping, school events, family gatherings, and the added cost of keeping warm through the colder weather, many households start to feel the squeeze. That’s why our Community Larder is here, to offer a little extra support when you need it, without any pressure or judgement.
The Community Larder was created four years ago with a simple purpose, to give local families a more affordable way to access good-quality food and everyday essentials. Once you’re registered, the Larder is open to everyone, and it works in a way that helps you stretch your weekly budget while still filling your cupboards with things you need. You’ll find a wide mix of items, including frozen foods, chilled products, tinned and packet items, dried goods, household supplies, and a selection of hygiene products. It means you can pop in and pick up what suits your family best.

We know that December can bring extra pressure, especially for parents doing their best to create a special Christmas at home. The Larder isn’t just about food, it’s also about peace of mind. Knowing there’s a place nearby where you can top up the essentials can help take some of the stress out of the season and make things feel a little lighter.
People use the Larder for all sorts of reasons. Some come along regularly, others use it during winter when bills are higher, and many pop in simply because it helps their money go further during a busy month. Whatever your situation, you’re always welcome.
Here are a few reasons families tell us they find the Larder helpful:
- It eases the pressure of weekly shopping
- It helps top up essentials during busy or expensive months
- It supports a healthier routine with varied food options
- It offers a friendly, welcoming place to visit
- It helps reduce food waste in the community
Everything we do at Netherton Park Neighbourhood Centre is about supporting local families in a warm, accessible, and practical way, and the Larder is a big part of that. It’s a simple service that makes a real difference, especially at this time of year when every little bit helps.
If you’d like to learn more or register, pop into the centre during opening hours. We’re always here to help, and you’ll find a friendly face ready to welcome you 🤗
